Appliance store financing for retailers

Updated 9 min read

Appliance store financing lets a shopper pay for a refrigerator, washer, range or full kitchen package over time through a lender the store offers. It matters because many appliance purchases are not planned: when the refrigerator dies, the shopper needs an answer before leaving the store, and one lender decline can send them to a competitor.

Pre-qualified up to $2,100Refrigerator replacement. One application, soft pull where supported.
Illustrative example. Each lender makes its own decision.

LendPro gives appliance retailers one application that reaches the lenders configured for the store, from LendPro's network of 18+ lenders and 25+ lending programs, with soft-pull pre-qualification where the provider supports it, inside STORIS and on your website, kiosks and text links. LendPro is not a lender. Lenders make all credit decisions and set all terms.

Key takeaways

  • Appliance store financing lets a shopper pay for a refrigerator, washer, range or kitchen package over time through a lender the store offers, and LendPro is not a lender.
  • One application reaches several lenders, so a single decline does not have to end an urgent replacement sale.
  • Retailers should check the pre-qualified amount against the full installed ticket, including installation, haul-away and protection plans, before the shopper selects an offer.
  • LendPro 2.0 is embedded in STORIS ERP and NextGen for appliance retailers on STORIS.

How do urgent and planned appliance purchases differ?

Appliance stores serve two very different shoppers, often on the same afternoon. Your financing setup should work for both.

Urgent replacement Planned upgrade
Situation Washer failed, refrigerator is warm, family needs it now Kitchen remodel, new home, suite upgrade
Typical ticket One unit plus install and haul-away Multiple units, often a package
What the shopper needs An answer before they leave, and fast delivery A monthly payment that fits the remodel budget
Financing risk One decline sends them to the next store Pre-qualified amount smaller than the package
What helps One application that reaches several lenders Online pre-qualification and a lender mix with limits that fit package tickets

Urgent buyers are often shoppers who did not budget for the expense. The Federal Reserve found that 63 percent of adults would cover a $400 emergency expense using cash or its equivalent, which means more than a third would not. A refrigerator costs far more than $400.

How does appliance financing work at the counter?

For an urgent replacement, the goal is an answer while the shopper is still in the store. One application reaches several lenders, so a decline from one does not end the visit. Shoppers see results on screen once lenders respond; each lender decides on its own timeline.

  1. The associate offers financing with the price. "Most people check what they pre-qualify for."
  2. The shopper picks a path. See If You Pre-Qualify, or No Credit Needed when the store offers it, on a tablet, a kiosk, a QR code or a text link, or from a hosted application the associate launches from the POS.
  3. Pre-qualified offers appear. Side by side when several providers pre-qualify the shopper, or in your order (prime, then near prime, then No Credit Needed) if the traditional waterfall setting is on. If a lender declines, the application is routed to another applicable lender, if one is available.
  4. The associate checks the pre-qualified amount against the installed ticket. Unit, install kit, haul-away and any protection plan.
  5. The shopper selects an offer and completes the provider's full application. The provider shows a confirmation with the available limit. Its full application may ask for employment, debit card and/or bank details. The shopper agrees to the provider's terms and submits. A lender may run a hard inquiry at this step, and the lender's final approval comes after the full application.
  6. The associate finalizes the sale in LendPro. Create the invoice and send it for e-signature, in store or by text or email link.
  7. Settlement is processed on delivery. Settlement is processed in LendPro when the customer receives the goods or service, so book delivery and installation with that in mind.

Where the provider supports pre-qualification, it uses a soft pull and won't affect credit scores. A lender may run a hard inquiry if the shopper accepts an offer.

What lender tiers should an appliance retailer offer?

Tier Who it serves Types of programs
Prime Lowest-cost terms and any lender promotions for strong-credit shoppers Bank and card programs
Near prime Catch prime declines on replacements and packages Installment lenders
Subprime and No Credit Needed Keep urgent buyers with thin or rebuilding credit from leaving without the appliance Installment and lease-to-own providers

LendPro's network spans 18+ lenders and 25+ lending programs; see how the tiers work in waterfall financing, and ask for the current lender lineup for your state during a demo. Lease-to-own is a rental-purchase agreement, not a loan. Total cost is higher than the cash price. Each lender sets its own approval criteria and terms. Availability varies by retailer, state and purchase. Lenders set promotional terms and required disclosures.

A single dryer and a $14,000 kitchen package are very different tickets, and each lender sets its own limits. Review your lender mix for those ticket sizes with LendPro. LendPro uses a financing flow configured for each location based on the lenders assigned to that location and the requirements of those programs. Contact LendPro to review configuration changes.

Does LendPro work inside STORIS for appliance retailers?

For appliance retailers on STORIS, LendPro 2.0 is embedded in STORIS ERP and NextGen, with eSTORIS planned, so associates run LendPro financing, with prime, near prime and lease-to-own options, inside the point of sale. Lease-to-own is a rental-purchase agreement, not a loan. Total cost is higher than the cash price. Reporting is by lender, store and associate, and First Right of Refusal (FROR) is supported on the See If You Pre-Qualify path with the traditional waterfall setting. In the latest integration, associates also finalize, transact and process returns and exchanges in one LendPro portal, without logging into each lender's portal (cancel and refund are available for most lenders in the network; a few providers still require the provider's portal for cancellations and refunds). See LendPro for STORIS.

On a different POS, LendPro can launch a hosted application from your POS through the Launch API; ask which systems are supported today. With POS Sync, results return to your system. LendPro's go-live SLA is 10 business days. Timing depends on lender activation and integration scope, and custom integrations take longer. LendPro confirms the start date and prerequisites during onboarding. Additional integration options may be available for specific needs. Discuss your workflow, required data, and implementation requirements with LendPro during an integration call.

What belongs on a financed appliance ticket?

Appliance tickets are rarely just the box. Plan for the rest of the ticket before you go live.

  • Installation, parts and haul-away. Whether labor and services can be financed depends on the lender and program. Lease-to-own generally covers goods, not labor or services. Confirm with each provider.
  • Protection plans. Mulberry offers product protection alongside LendPro financing where the retailer offers it.
  • Coverage. Check the pre-qualified amount against the full installed ticket, not the unit price, before the shopper selects an offer.
  • Backorders. A backordered washer can sit for weeks. Ask each lender how long its offer or approval holds on a backordered unit, and what the shopper does if it lapses.
  • Settlement timing. Settlement is processed in LendPro when the customer receives the goods or service, so a backorder delays your cash as well as the delivery.

Packages, promotions and advertising

Planned-upgrade buyers often shop a full kitchen or a laundry pair, and holiday events and manufacturer rebate periods bring them in. Your financing setup should support the whole package, not just one unit.

  • Pre-qualify before the quote. A remodel shopper who pre-qualifies on your website knows whether the package fits before you build the quote. LendPro helps add a See If You Pre-Qualify button and "as low as" payment estimates to appliance product pages at no additional cost. Payment estimates are examples only; lenders set APR, term and payment based on approval. See AEO financing pages and product-page financing.
  • Quote to the pre-qualified amount. If the amount covers the range and refrigerator but not the dishwasher, show the payment difference instead of losing the whole package.
  • Know your cost per plan. Promotional plans, such as special-rate or deferred-interest periods, are lender programs. The lender sets the terms, qualification and any merchant fee.
  • Check rebate-event flyers. A manufacturer rebate flyer that adds "or $45 a month" is a payment ad and can require federal Truth in Lending disclosures. Get the lender's approved wording first; lenders set promotional terms and required disclosures.
  • Keep other offers behind the promotion. A shopper who does not qualify for the promotional plan should still see near prime or No Credit Needed offers.

Configure financing for each sales channel. Online and in-store lender availability, application requirements, and results may differ. LendPro works with the retailer to establish the appropriate configuration for each channel.

What should an appliance retailer measure?

  • Application rate on urgent replacements. Compare Daily Applications by location and associate with your replacement tickets. These buyers need financing most and are easiest to lose.
  • Approval rates by lender. The Approval Rates report shows pre-qual and full-app approval rates and average approval side by side, which tells you whether the near prime position is working.
  • Coverage of the installed ticket. Export to CSV and compare average approval with your average installed ticket. This is your own analysis.
  • Online pre-qualifications that close in store. Match exported applications against store sales to read the planned-upgrade funnel.
  • Results by associate and store. Sales Performance shows who offers financing early, when Employee Tracking is on.

What mistakes do appliance retailers make with financing?

  • Waiting for the shopper to ask. Urgent buyers who expect a decline do not ask. They leave.
  • Pricing the unit, financing the unit, forgetting the install. The shopper pre-qualifies for the unit, then the installed ticket comes in higher than the amount.
  • One lender for every ticket. Small replacements and large packages often need lenders with different limits.
  • No path for thin-file shoppers. Without a No Credit Needed option, the urgent buyer with limited credit walks.

Frequently asked questions

How does appliance financing work for a retailer?

The shopper pre-qualifies at the counter or online, picks an offer and completes that lender's full application. The store finalizes the sale in LendPro, and settlement is processed when the appliance is delivered. The lender pays the store, and the shopper repays the lender or makes lease payments to the lease-to-own provider.

Can a shopper finance an urgent replacement while still in the store?

Shoppers see pre-qualified offers on screen once lenders respond, and one application reaches several lenders. The final approval comes after the provider's full application, and each lender decides on its own timeline.

Does LendPro integrate with STORIS?

Yes. LendPro 2.0 is embedded in STORIS ERP and NextGen, with eSTORIS planned.

Can installation and haul-away be financed?

It depends on the lender and program. Lease-to-own generally covers goods, not labor or services. Confirm with each provider before you go live.

Does appliance pre-qualification hurt credit?

Where the provider supports pre-qualification, it uses a soft pull and won't affect credit scores. A lender may run a hard inquiry if the shopper accepts an offer.

Can I keep my current appliance financing lender?

Yes. Many retailers keep their current prime lender first and add near prime and No Credit Needed lenders behind it. LendPro configures the order for each location, and changes are requested through LendPro.

Can a shopper finance a full kitchen package?

It can work if the package fits within the pre-qualified amount and the lender's limits. Review your lender mix with LendPro so it includes lenders whose limits fit package tickets.

How long does it take to set up appliance financing?

LendPro's go-live SLA is 10 business days. Lender activation and integration scope affect timing, and custom POS integrations take longer.

What about shoppers with bad or no credit?

The shopper can choose No Credit Needed at the start, which goes straight to no credit needed providers. The provider's full application may include a check with the credit bureaus and/or alternative credit sources. Lease-to-own is a rental-purchase agreement, not a loan. Total cost is higher than the cash price.
